Masala Chai (“Spiced Tea”) or Chai Masala (“Tea Spiced”)?
Masala means “spice blend” or “spice mix,” so there is really no fixed recipe for chai masala, other than perhaps family recipes from various cultures and traditions.
It is thought when you transcend a simple masala with intention to serve a specific medicinal purpose or health concern it then becomes what is referred to as a karha. This is an important aspect of the intricate history of Chai and is perhaps central to defining the heart of chai masala itself.
